Why Should You Background Check?

You know you should…but you’re too busy to research the practical and legal details of background checking. So you postpone it. But in the past your staff was small and you knew everyone. You could maintain a close handle on everyone’s activities. Now you’re growing. Or this is the first time an applicant wasn’t referred by a friend. Maybe you’ve heard a rumor that a current employee isn’t as clean as you hoped. Or your insurance company is penalizing you for drivers with poor driving records. HireRight offers the following easy ways to help you take action simply, quickly and legally so you can get back to what you do best.

Want some facts? The statistics tell the story.

  • Thirty percent of all business failures are caused by employee theft. 1
  • Thirty-four percent of all application forms contain outright lies about experience, education and ability to perform essential functions on the job. 2
  • On average, in US businesses, at least half of all new hires "don't work out." 3
  • On-the-job violence costs employers $36 billion each year. 4
  • Your liability or auto insurance costs may be affected

Not If, But How?

A recent study of HRTools.com members showed that of those companies not currently conducting background checks, 45% plan to start in the next 12 months. With so much information and misinformation out there, it’s hard to choose. HireRight makes it easy by providing best practice background search packages, as well as legal compliance information, reference material, even forms you can download and make your own.

Checking current employees

Many of our customers tell us that they are checking current employees because they are beginning a new policy of checking applicants, they have had a problem with a current employee, or they want to start fresh.

Meeting vendor or customer requirements

In an increasingly litigious and regulated environment, it’s likely that someone you do business with; a partner, vendor, or customer, may require you to prove that the employees going to their site have been background checked.

Maintaining Compliance and Consistency

Conducting your background checks consistently and in accordance with the applicable laws is smart and safe. This doesn’t mean you have to conduct the exact same checks on each type of employee, but your policy should be applied the same to all employees of the same type to protect you from discriminating. Check with your company’s legal advisor on these matters.

Reducing driving risk and liabililty

Many companies have employees who drive a company vehicle, or even their own vehicle on behalf of the company. An employee with a bad driving record may be a risk and might even increase your insurance premiums. By checking driving records, you can help protect and even promote your safe driving record.
