Why do employers check criminal history?
A background check is often a final step taken by employers to help make a well-informed hiring decision and protect the employer (and all their employees) from a number of potential risks. Employers may review a candidate’s criminal record history to help them evaluate the honesty, character, safety and qualifications of their candidates.
Accordingly, if an employer finds that you are dishonest by not disclosing a criminal record (when lawfully requested), it may be an issue for a potential employer and could result in loss of the job opportunity. The best approach is to be honest with your potential employer and explain the situation.
