What are reference checks and why are they done?

Supervisors and/or coworkers listed by the candidate as references can provide an assessment of the candidate’s capabilities and work record. References can include personal and professional relationships.

There are specific regulations that govern what types of questions can be asked. These questions usually cover the length of time the candidate worked at the organization or if that previous employer would rehire this candidate.

This check is also known as a professional reference check.
