A recent article by Talent Management revealed a significant security gap in many organizations’ employment screening programs. As companies increasingly turn to contingent workers (temps, contractors, vendor and partner employees) to fulfill their workforce needs, their exposure to risk could be increasing, since many organizations do not perform background checks on temporary workers.

According to the 2010 HireRight Employment Screening Benchmarking Report, only about 35 percent of organizations screen their contingent workforce, representing a critical security risk and major lapse in the background screening procedures of many employers. One simple option organizations should consider to mitigate risk is to require the temporary staffing agency they use to background screen the applicants. The types of background checks to be performed may also be written into the contract with the agency.
