Top 5 Things to Do at SHRM

When you ask folks about their favorite time of year, you probably expect to hear things like the holiday season, summer, or Halloween. But if you’re asking someone in Human Resources, you might be surprised to hear them say “SHRM season!” There’s good reason for that. In less than a week, HR professionals from all over the world will gather in the sunny city of Las Vegas to share ideas, learn about what’s new in the HR industry, and so much more! With high profile speakers (Martha Stewart for example), exhibitors fighting for attendee attention, and events you’ll remember for years to come, this tradeshow is something special.

We can’t wait, and with only a few more days to go we decided to take the edge off by creating a list of our top five things to do while at SHRM, in no particular order. If you’re thinking that it might be difficult to narrow down an event in Vegas to just five tops, you called it. We had to make some rules to get here, so we’ve chosen only events and attractions that are either walking distance from the SHRM conference building or provided by SHRM itself.

  1. Games, giveaways, and goods on the show floor

Last time we checked, the number of exhibitors at this upcoming conference is up to 628. There are 628 companies on the floor, all competing for YOUR attention. Most of them will have stocked their booth with goodies, games, snacks, and all manner of fun tchotchkes to try and lure you into their sales pitch. On top of free giveaways (who doesn’t like free stuff), HireRight will have a matching game with new winners every day that will win $20 Amazon gift cards, chances to win a $250 Amazon gift card, and gourmet coffee just in case that late trip to your hotel bar leaves you a little bleary-eyed the next day. That’s just HireRight, one out of 628 exhibitors. Bring your favorite tote bags (or don’t, someone’s probably handing them out for free) to stock up on merch from your favorite vendors. That’s not even counting the incredible opportunities to speak to these vendors and learn about what they can offer your company and how their products can make your HR life easier.

  1. Guest speakers

We mentioned this up top, but it’s more than worth making our top five. As the largest HR tradeshow in the world, SHRM attracts some serious talent and provides attendees unprecedented access to the latest and best speakers in the HR world. Innovation and cultural change is ever-evolving, and the speakers at SHRM are on the front lines of the HR landscape. In 2019, these speakers include homemaker and business-woman-extraordinaire Martha Stewart, who in 2015 merged her company with one of the leading brand management companies in the world. Not only is she a household name around the globe, she is in a unique position to address the world of Human Resources.

Also speaking at SHRM this year is the incomparable Brene Brown. Brene is a celebrated author and researcher at the University of Houston where she holds the Huffington Foundation. She also holds the honor of having her TED talk – The Power of Vulnerability – hold a slot in the top five most-watched TED talks in the world. This achievement led to Netflix approaching her for a special, making her the first researcher to have filmed a talk on Netflix. While we can’t suggest that people have fan-moments at tradeshows, this year, we get it.

  1. Lionel Richie?!

This is not a drill! Singer/songwriter/Grammy winner/Oscar winner/ our favorite artist to listen to while standing dramatically in the rain Lionel Richie will be playing at SHRM on Tuesday night of the conference! Best part? Concert tickets are included with registration at the show, so if you’re registered, your ticket is already bought and paid for.

  1. Discounted shows

After the day’s activities are done, you’re in the City that Never Sleeps, and SHRM is helping to make sure you have a great time even when the conference center lights go off for the night. Both the Blue Man Group and Cirque du Soleil Las Vegas are offering discounted tickets for SHRM attendees. With all the options presented, you’ll only be bored during SHRM if you want to be!

  1. The food

Any foodies out there? This entry is for you. While there will be plenty of food provided during the convention, make sure to save some room. You’re in Las Vegas, and some of the best eats in the world are just a stone’s throw away. For example, if you leave the convention center and hop on the monorail, it’s a short ride to Morimoto Las Vegas, a restaurant owned by celebrated Japanese culinary artist and Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto. Considered one of the foremost chefs responsible for adapting Japanese sushi to the American palate, Chef Morimoto is royalty among foodies the world over.

Not up for sushi? Check out CUT by Wolfgang Puck for another taste of celebrity chef cuisine. There’s also The Peppermill Restaurant and Fireside Grill for classic American fare, El Dorado Cantina for authentic Mexican, and so much more within walking distance that we could make three more lists dedicated purely to food.  No matter what you’re in the mood for, you won’t leave hungry.

Here at HireRight, we’re tidying up the last details for SHRM, and making sure that everything we’re bringing to the table is best-in-class. Between the concerts, food, shows, and games, we’re prepped to showcase our background screening, and how we can make recruiting, retaining, and developing talent easier for everyone.
