Commercial truck drivers who deliver vital commodities across the United States must pass thorough background checks and meet stringent safety regulations.

Yet a recent CBS News investigation revealed that many school bus drivers – the people charged with protecting the safety of children on the road to and from schools and summer camps – are not held to the same exacting standards. And the results of such leniency have occasionally proven catastrophic.

According to the article, there are approximately 22,000 bus crashes a year, leaving thousands of students injured. And on average, at least once a week a school bus driver is arrested for driving under the influence, child pornography, or even sexual assault.

Improving the Hiring Process: FMCSA’s Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse

On December 5, 2016, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) finalized a rule to create a drug and alcohol clearinghouse for commercial driver license holders (CDL).

The clearinghouse will act as a central repository for drivers’ positive test results, refusals to test and other such federal violations of the drug and alcohol testing regulations.

Once fully operational the clearinghouse will significantly improve safety and help expedite the hiring process for commercial drivers.

Ban the Box Starts January 1, 2017 in Los Angeles

The popular initiative to “Ban the Box” was approved by the Los Angeles City Council in November and will take effect January 1, 2017.

The new ordinance applies to Los Angeles businesses that employ 10 or more employees as well as contractors doing business with the city.

The law may affect as many as hundreds of thousands of employees, according to Councilman Curren Price.
