#LifeAtHireRight: Exploring our HUMAN Affinity Groups
At HireRight, our teams work hard to build the future of screening services while striving to put the #customerfirst. We're exploring what #LifeAtHireRight means for our employees – in their words. This time, we are getting to know Aaron Binkowski, Co-President of HUMAN affinity group. We hear about what DE&I means to him, and his career journey.
Here at HireRight, our teams work hard to build the future of screening services while striving to put the customer first. But what is it like to work here? And who are the employees behind our background screening and workforce solutions?
This time, we are getting to know Aaron Binkowski, Co-President of HUMAN (HireRight’s United Multicultural Action Network). Aaron is going to share with us a little more about HUMAN, and how diversity and inclusion have helped him shape his career. In follow-up blog posts, we will meet leaders of our other HUMAN groups.
Aaron, can you tell us a little about HUMAN?
HUMAN was derived from the need to implement change beyond affinity group conversations and create a long-lasting policy that will continue to have a positive impact across our organization. I am honored to work with the HUMAN leadership team and the HUMAN members, this group is a legitimate representation of our peers, and the only way forward is one driven by a collective of talented and diverse thought leadership. My personal goal as an ally in HUMAN and other industry groups is to create sustainable access, development, and growth opportunities for any person entering any occupation while ensuring the systems designed around those pathways are fair and in the best interests of the people.
How long have you worked at HireRight and what is your role?
I’ve been at HireRight going on three years as an employee. My first role here was as a security consultant augmenting the GRC (Governance, Risk and Compliance) Manager position in 2018. I was hired to repair the information security program, which I did for a year. I’m now the Sr. Manager of Governance, Risk, and Compliance, at HireRight. My day to day involves ensuring that the processes GRC is responsible for and those we influence are operating as expected. I perform assessments to keep informed of new or changing risks. Additionally, my team responds to those risks to ensure we can support our customer requirements and other compliance obligations. Ultimately, my work helps ensure that there are processes in place designed to protect sensitive information, that we continually improve those processes, and monitor the environment for changes.
What office are you located out of?
I work out of our Irvine, California, location. Although in the last couple of years, I have been working from home, in the Irvine area.
What was it like to join the team, and what do you love most about your job?
Joining the team at HireRight was interesting, I saw a lot of issues that needed to be fixed, which is why I decided to move from a consulting role, into a full-time position. I love the partnerships here at HireRight the most. Our groups like HUMAN, PRIDE, and others are comprised of people who I also work with in my day-to-day role within the Governance, Risk and Compliance team. I enjoy knowing that our work enables so many business processes here at HireRight, when we make even the slightest enhancements to our program, many team members can feel the positive results. Being a critical sales enabler by undergoing security audits, it gives us a sense of pride when we can contribute to HireRight’s growth.
What does inclusion and belonging mean to you?
To me, it means that the environment is set up for all of us to thrive in, regardless of our effort and ambition to change or advance. It also means that the culture is inviting, and employees naturally want to stay.
Why is diversity, equity, and inclusion important for organizations?
People are our organization. If it makes sense in any other context, it automatically makes sense in a place where we spend most of our time. In addition to that, any business that’s just looking at the numbers is missing the thought-diversity and growth associated with companies who proactively address DEI.
What makes you passionate about HUMAN?
Progress. We have a team of rockstars who share the passion and see the way forward, change is addictive and we’re only getting started.
How do you feel that the HUMAN group is making a difference here at HireRight?
We have already seen cultural changes happening via cross collaboration, development opportunities, and increased awareness that are precursors for the work ahead, the focus is incremental progress, and we are achieving that.
What do you hope to see in the future at HireRight affinity groups?
We want to create a culture change and foster an environment of equality trust and transparency. When our affinity group and employee resource groups grow exponentially, we’ll know we’ve created a true culture of inclusion and belonging. That culture will enable us to create management opportunities, drive policy improvements, and become an influence in our industry and partners.
