HireRight Hot Takes: SHRM 2021
HireRight was thrilled to sponsor the SHRM conference in Vegas - in person! We enjoyed seeing our customers, partners, colleagues, and exploring how to make smarter hiring decisions together.
On September 8-12, thousands of human resources (HR) professionals gathered in Las Vegas, Nevada, for the SHRM 2021 Conference and Expo, sponsored by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). The SHRM conference is THE place to level up professional skills, network with peers, gain industry insights, and visit the largest HR expo in the world.
HireRight was thrilled to participate as an exhibitor this year! This was our first large, in-person event since early 2020, and we were excited to interact with our customers, partners, HR professionals, and each other for the first time in nearly 18 months. Here are our biggest takeaways from the event.
We Love Our Customers
“HireRight? Oh, we love you guys!” This was one of the first things we heard as we were setting up our booth for the show. A customer of ours that works for a major U.S. trucking company was helping with logistics for the show and stopped by to tell us how happy he was with our services. This was music to our ears! One of the best parts about conferences and events is hearing from our customers, and getting their feedback.
After a long pandemic, we wanted to give a special thanks to our customers. In addition to our booth, we held a special VIP customer lounge on the show floor. We offered our customers a quiet place to relax with refreshments, including freshly baked cookies. We were also excited to offer our customers the chance to get their caricatures drawn by a local artist.
At the booth, we were able to treat our customers, and those new to HireRight, to a fun digital trivia game to test their HR Smarts! Amazon gift cards were raffled off to those that topped the leaderboards. We also delighted HR professionals with HR ‘”flare” – buttons and stickers – to show off their expertise level.

We work closely with our partners to create award-winning user experiences and streamlined processes for background checks. Together with our partners, we provide greater efficiencies and better-quality hires.
This year, HireRight partners UKG, iCIMS, Ceridian, and Paychex were also exhibiting at SHRM. As with our customers, it has been a long time since we have seen our partners! We loved having the chance to visit their booths, check out their offerings, and reconnect in person. We are looking forward to seeing more HireRight partners at HR Tech at the end of the month!
Attendees from across the globe attend the SHRM conference to network and learn. They had access to hundreds of educational sessions to further their professional experience, and thousands of peers to meet with. Keynote sessions with Michael Phelps, Chipotle, and entertainment by Michael Bolton and Patti LaBelle were fun bonuses for attending the conference.
Another benefit of attending SHRM is staying ahead of the news in the HR industry. Last week, U.S. President Joe Biden announced a federal vaccine mandate for employers with 100+ employees. As you can imagine, this was a major topic during the conference, and HR professionals had many questions. How will this affect their HR department? How can they collect this information from their employees and candidates safely and securely? What about testing solutions for those that are not vaccinated? Product Manager Chris Pegut was at the show to help answer some of these questions in our booth.
“Quickly and efficiently tracking the vaccination of your employees and candidates will be key when the mandates take effect,” says Chris. “It will be even easier if there is a method of self-reporting their status, taking the burden off of the HR individuals collecting that information.”
Fortunately, HireRight does offer a solution to help meet these upcoming requirements. Our newly updated electronic Medical Questionnaire allows individuals to self-report their vaccination status. They can upload a copy of their vaccination card directly to the HireRight Applicant Center. The questionnaire follows the guidelines established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Testing employees who are not vaccinated also adds another layer to the HR workload. “Testing services are going to be needed in the event that employees are not vaccinated, which can add another layer to the already heavy HR workload,” explains Chris. “Utilizing services that are already present in your HR technologies will help decrease the hours needed to test employees”.
HireRight offers a number of simple, and powerful, employer solutions for managing COVID-19 risk in the workplace. These solutions are designed to provide employers with the tools that meet the guidelines for the new federal mandates. Among our solutions are ad hoc and assurance (viral marker) testing services. Ad hoc testing is for employees displaying symptoms and can be administered as needed, while assurance testing is an ongoing testing program conducted for your workforce at periodic, pre-defined intervals. In addition to meeting with attendees and HireRight partners, this was an opportunity for our employees to reconnect with each other — and in some cases meet for the first time!
“I started at HireRight last September, in the middle of the pandemic” explains Suzanne DeBow, who is on the Marketing team. “This is the first time meeting my colleagues in person! I have worked with them for an entire year, and it is so exciting to put (masked) faces to the names”.
Our employees had a blast getting to know each other again at team dinners and out on the town. They also really enjoyed connecting with our customers and those new to HireRight on the show floor.
