Rewind - A Look Back at HireRight's Favorite Blogs of 2022
We take a look back at some of our favorite blog posts in 2022 - Compliance and Legislation, Behind the Screens of background screening across the globe, and our team members expereiences.
This year, as the pandemic was winding down, organizations and employers adjusted to new working environments, as well as new hiring challenges. The “Great Resignation” has made many employers pivot and adjust their talent acquisition and recruiting strategies. New legislation around criminal reform, pay equity, marijuana laws and more have disrupted the hiring space.
This year, our blog covered a wide range of topics, from getting to know our team members and exploring employee-led affinity groups, to background screening practices across the globe, and to changes to HR legislation. Here is a look at some of our favorite blog posts from the past year.
Behind the Screens Across the World
This year, we expanded our “Behind the Screens” series to see how our teams handle background screening in region – and the challenges our customers face in different areas around the world. We explored EMEA, the Middle East, and Latin America. Additionally, we pulled back the curtain on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the workplace, and wage equity.
HireRight has had a local presence in the Middle East since 2016, with an office in Dubai, UAE. James Randall, Managing Director of the Middle East, and Account Director Carl Simington shared their insights on background screening in the Middle East, some of the challenges faced in the region, and how things are different from background screening in the rest of EMEA.
Background Screening in Latin America has unique challenges and requirements for human resources and recruiting teams. In our special video issue of Behind the Screens, we talked to Ryan Christensen, General Manager of Latin America at HireRight. We discussed the state of background screening in Latin America, and how it is different from the U.S. and the rest of the world, including compliance requirements.
AI is quickly becoming prolific in the workplace, and in HR practices. In our video issue of Behind the Screens, we talked to HireRight Associate General Counsel, Alonzo Martinez about AI in the workplace. Alonzo shed light on how AI is being used in recruiting practices, as well as performance management tactics, and how legislation across the country is attempting to keep up with these new practices.
Compliance + Emerging Legislation
HR leaders often struggle to understand and comply with ever-changing legislation around human resources, recruiting and background screening. This year, we covered a variety of legislative topics around recruiting, hiring, and transportation.
In 2022 several states adjusted or introduced new laws around job protections for marijuana users, and candidates. We covered new legislation in Washington DC advancing job protections for marijuana users, and how Philadelphia has prohibited pre-hire marijuana testing for candidates. Additionally, the U.S. saw several states adjusting legislation around pay equity and salary transparency. We explored new legislation around California’s new pay transparency laws, and New York City’s new legislation around salary disclosures in job postings. We also featured blogs that broadly covered U.S. Ban-the-Box laws and how salary history bans and transparency laws are impacting U.S. employers.
The transportation and trucking industry is also no stranger to evolving regulations and legislation. In January of 2023, employers need to be aware of the changes coming to annual Motor Vehicle Records (MVR) checks and the FMSCA Clearinghouse. This year we also provided info in our two part blog on what employers need to know about FCRA for Motor carriers.
#LifeAtHireRight Putting the Spotlight On Our Team Members
Perhaps our favorite blog topics are those around our team members! We love to hear directly from teams in our offices (and remotely) across the globe in our #LifeAtHireRight series. These posts provide insights on what it is like to work at HireRight and an opportunity to hear from our team members in their own words. Our employee led affinity groups grew and flourished in 2022, despite not having the ability to meet face to face.
We started the year hearing from our HUMAN affinity group co-president Aaron Binkowski, on what DE&I means to him and how the group has grown. In February, we spoke with our BLM affinity group leaders. Zeena Wright, Director of Data Excellence and president of the HireRight BLM affinity group shared her career journey, and her role within the group. We also heard from Kim Coy, VP of the BLM affinity group. Kim shared how the group got started, what they do, and her role here at HireRight.
Throughout the year, we talked to other leaders of our employee led affinity groups, including our WorldWide Women Affinity Group, our API (Asian Pacific Island) Affinity Group, and our HOLA (Hispanic Organization for Latinos/as and Allies) group. These team members shared the origins of these groups, what they do, and a bit about their own careers in background screening. In June, we put the spotlight on our BLM group once more, and had them share with us the significance of Juneteenth, and why DE&I and inclusion activities are important for organizations. Also in June, we were excited to hear from multiple participants in our PRIDE affinity group in our two-part blog on what PRIDE means to our team members. In October, for National Coming Out Day, we were honored to have employees share their stories and experiences about the difficulties of coming out, and being out in the workplace.
